In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in the East European fresh whole chicken market, when its value increased by 7.2% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Fresh Whole Chicken Production in Eastern Europe

In value terms, fresh whole chicken production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons), together accounting for 80% of total production. Romania, Belarus, Bulgaria and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Bulgaria (with a CAGR of +3.8%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, overseas shipments of fresh or chilled whole chickens decreased by -5.4% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after five years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 6.5%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Poland (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together mixing up 74% of total exports. Russia (X tons) held a 7.6% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Bulgaria (7.3%). The following exporters - Ukraine (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) - together made up 7.2% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +86.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest fresh whole chicken supplying countries in Eastern Europe were Poland ($X), Belarus ($X) and Bulgaria ($X), together accounting for 81% of total exports. Russia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

Russia, with a CAGR of +76.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, rising by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a mild setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2021, supplies from abroad of fresh or chilled whole chickens decreased by -8.5% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -35.0% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Russia (X tons) represented the major importer of fresh or chilled whole chickens, mixing up 49% of total imports. Ukraine (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Czech Republic (11%), Bulgaria (8.3%) and Latvia (4.8%). The following importers - Moldova (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) - each accounted for a 7.6% share of total imports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of fresh or chilled whole chickens. At the same time, Moldova (+82.6%), Ukraine (+38.0%) and Latvia (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of +82.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-4.0%), Lithuania (-4.1%) and Bulgaria (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ukraine (+10 p.p.) and Moldova (+3.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Lithuania (-2.3 p.p.), Bulgaria (-6.1 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fresh or chilled whole chickens in Eastern Europe, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 10% share.

In Russia, fresh whole chicken imports contracted by an average annual rate of -2.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (-1.8% per year) and Ukraine (+45.0% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, surging by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild contraction.
