Composite Paperboard Exports

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2023, overseas shipments of composite paper and paperboard decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, composite paperboard exports shrank to $X in 2023. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Poland represented the main exporter of composite paper and paperboard in Eastern Europe, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2023. The Czech Republic (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Russia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. X% share of total exports. The following exporters - Lithuania (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) - each amounted to a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, average annual rates of growth with regard to composite paperboard exports from Poland stood at X%. At the same time, Ukraine (X%), the Czech Republic (X%) and Lithuania (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ukraine emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Russia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (X p.p.) and the Czech Republic (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Poland ($X) remains the largest composite paperboard supplier in Eastern Europe, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with an X% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value in Poland totaled X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (X% per year) and Russia (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2023, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the last eleven years, it increased at an average annual rate of X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2023 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Eastern Europe

In 2023, overseas purchases of composite paper and paperboard decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, composite paperboard imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2023. Total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2022, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Poland was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by the Czech Republic (X tons), Latvia (X tons), Romania (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Slovakia (X tons), together mixing up a X% share of total imports.

Imports into Poland increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Romania (X%), Lithuania (X%) and Latvia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, Hungary (X%), the Czech Republic (X%) and Slovakia (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Based on 2023 figures, composite paperboard import price increased by X% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when the import price increased by X%. The level of import peaked in 2023 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Hungary ($X per ton) and the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
