Wood Charcoal Market Size in Eastern Asia

After four years of growth, the East Asian wood charcoal market decreased by -7.6% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, wood charcoal production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 109%. Wood Charcoal Exports

Exports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of wood charcoal were exported in Eastern Asia; increasing by 4.5% on the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -8.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 50%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood charcoal exports reduced modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 36%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from China (X tons), together reaching 98% of total export.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wood charcoal exports, with a CAGR of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021. China (+6.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) also remains the largest wood charcoal supplier in Eastern Asia.

In China, wood charcoal exports expanded at an average annual rate of +16.4% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for China.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for China amounted to +12.7% per year.

Imports in Eastern Asia

In 2021, overseas purchases of wood charcoal decreased by -13.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -32.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood charcoal imports shrank modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 22%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) represented the key importer of wood charcoal, generating 53% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Japan (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), together generating a 46% share of total imports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wood charcoal imports, with a CAGR of +5.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Korea (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Japan (-1.7%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Taiwan (Chinese) and Japan saw its share reduced by -2.4% and -9.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest wood charcoal importing markets in Eastern Asia were Japan ($X), China ($X) and South Korea ($X), with a combined 95% share of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +4.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild decline. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
