Styrene-Acrylonitrile Market Size in Eastern Asia

In 2020, the East Asian styrene-acrylonitrile market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a slight descent. From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of styrene-acrylonitrile production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by South Korea, while styrene-acrylonitrile production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

Over the period under review, exports recorded a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tonnes in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, styrene-acrylonitrile exports contracted significantly to $X in 2020. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2020, South Korea (X tonnes) represented the main exporter of styrene-acrylonitrile (san) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (abs) copolymers (in primary forms), constituting X% of total exports. Hong Kong SAR (X tonnes) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Japan (X%). China (X tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Korea increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020. At the same time, China (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Korea was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Hong Kong SAR (-X% per year) and Japan (-X% per year).

The styrene-acrylonitrile export price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per tonne in 2020, declining by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a mild decline. Overall, imports showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. The volume of import peaked at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, styrene-acrylonitrile imports reduced to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% year-to-year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2010; however, from 2011 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.
