Maize Market Size in Eastern Asia

In 2020, the East Asian maize market decreased by -X% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% year-to-year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, consumption failed to regain the momentum.

Maize Production in Eastern Asia

In value terms, maize production fell sharply to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. In general, production recorded a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, production remained at a lower figure.

China (X tonnes) remains the largest maize producing country in Eastern Asia, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, maize production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Japan (X tonnes), threefold.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China totaled +X%.

In 2020, the average maize yield in Eastern Asia declined modestly to X tonnes per ha, which is down by -X% compared with 2019 figures. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the maize yield reached the maximum level at X tonnes per ha in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007 to 2020; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked in 2020 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Production By Country in Eastern Asia

The country with the largest volume of maize production was China (X tonnes), accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, maize production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Japan (X tonnes), threefold.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China stood at +X%.

Exports in Eastern Asia

For the third consecutive year, Eastern Asia recorded decline in overseas shipments of maize (green), which decreased by -X% to X tonnes in 2020. In general, exports recorded a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, maize exports dropped to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of maize (green), namely China, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the maize (green) exports, with a CAGR of -X% from 2007 to 2020. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) also remains the largest maize supplier in Eastern Asia.

Export Prices by Country

Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2020 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, maize imports soared to $X in 2020. Overall, imports posted strong growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Hong Kong SAR prevails in maize imports structure, finishing at X tonnes, which was near X% of total imports in 2020. Macao SAR (X tonnes) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by South Korea (X%). Japan (X tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Hong Kong SAR was also the fastest-growing in terms of the maize (green) imports, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007 to 2020. At the same time, Macao SAR (+X%) and Japan (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Korea (-X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2007 to 2020, the share of Hong Kong SAR increased by +X% percentage points, while Japan (-X p.p.) and South Korea (-X p.p.) saw their share reduced. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported maize (green) in Eastern Asia, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Japan ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value in Hong Kong SAR stood at +X%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (+X% per year) and South Korea (-X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The maize import price in Eastern Asia stood at $X per tonne in 2020, picking up by X% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible increase from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, maize import price increased by +X% against 2012 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per tonne), while Macao SAR ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
