China (X tons) remains the largest fresh whole chicken producing country in Eastern Asia, accounting for 81% of total volume. Moreover, fresh whole chicken production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Japan (X tons), sixfold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China stood at +1.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Japan (-4.9% per year) and South Korea (-6.3% per year).

Fresh Whole Chicken Exports

Exports in Eastern Asia

For the fourth year in a row, Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of fresh or chilled whole chickens, which increased by 7% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -23.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +85.6% against 2013 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 14%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The biggest shipments were from China (X tons), together finishing at 99.9% of total export.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fresh or chilled whole chickens exports, with a CAGR of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) also remains the largest fresh whole chicken supplier in Eastern Asia.

In 2021, the amount of fresh or chilled whole chickens imported in Eastern Asia rose remarkably to X tons, growing by 12% against the year before. In general, imports posted a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fresh whole chicken imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Hong Kong SAR was the major importer of fresh or chilled whole chickens in Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 87% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Macao SAR (X tons), mixing up a 13% share of total imports.
