The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 30%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Germany (X units), Sweden (X units) and Poland (X units) were the main destinations of leather apparel exports from Denmark, together comprising 49% of total exports. These countries were followed by France, Norway, the Netherlands, Italy, the UK, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Finland and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +21.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for leather apparel exported from Denmark were Germany ($X), Sweden ($X) and Poland ($X), together accounting for 52% of total exports. In 2021, the average leather apparel export price amounted to $X per unit, falling by -37.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (-4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Denmark

For the fifth consecutive year, Denmark recorded decline in supplies from abroad of apparel of leather or of composition leather, which decreased by -19.7% to X units in 2021. In general, imports saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 43%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather apparel imports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, India (X units) constituted the largest leather apparel supplier to Denmark, accounting for a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, leather apparel imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Pakistan (X units), fourfold. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
