Alumina Market Size in Denmark

The Danish alumina market contracted modestly to $X in 2020, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Alumina consumption peaked at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2020, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of alumina, when their volume decreased by -X% to X tonnes. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, exports reached the peak of X tonnes. from 2015 to 2020, the growth exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, alumina exports dropped sharply to $X in 2020. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Norway (X tonnes) was the main destination for alumina exports from Denmark, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, alumina exports to Norway exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Philippines (X tonnes), ninefold. South Africa (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Norway amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (+X% per year) and South Africa (+X% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for alumina exported from Denmark were the Philippines ($X), South Africa ($X) and Norway ($X), together comprising X% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Norway (+X% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average alumina export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, growing by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, export price reached the peak level of $X per tonne. from 2011 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Uganda ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uganda, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Denmark

In 2020, purchases abroad of alumina decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2017, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 with an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tonnes. from 2009 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, alumina imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2020. In general, total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, imports increased by +X% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Imports peaked at $X in 2019, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In 2020, Germany (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of alumina to Denmark, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, alumina imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the U.S. (X tonnes), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by China (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the U.S. (-X% per year) and China (-X% per year).
