Exports from Cuba

For the ninth consecutive year, Cuba recorded decline in overseas shipments of semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs), which decreased by -1% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The smallest decline of -0.7% was in 2017. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor LED exports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a dramatic descent. The smallest decline of -14% was in 2018. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Venezuela (X units) was the main destination for semiconductor LED exports from Cuba, with a 68% share of total exports. Moreover, semiconductor LED exports to Venezuela exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X units), twofold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Venezuela stood at -16.8%.

In value terms, Venezuela ($X) remains the key foreign market for semiconductor light emitting diodes (LEDs) exports from Cuba, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 5.7% share of total exports.

Imports into Cuba

Semiconductor LED imports into Cuba shrank rapidly to X units in 2021, declining by -33.1% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 445%. Imports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor LED imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 268% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
