Exports from Cuba

For the eighth year in a row, Cuba recorded growth in shipments abroad of candied fruits, which increased by 77% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 335% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, candied fruit exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 209%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for candied fruit exports from Cuba, accounting for a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, candied fruit exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Spain (X kg), fivefold.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of candied fruits, when their volume increased by 23% to X tons. Overall, imports recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 176% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, candied fruit imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 273%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest candied fruit supplier to Cuba, with a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, candied fruit imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain amounted to +21.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+3.7% per year) and Panama (+42.7% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of candied fruit to Cuba, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 26% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain totaled +21.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+7.8% per year) and Panama (+43.2% per year).

The average candied fruit import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -2.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
