Densified Wood Market Size in Cuba

After four years of growth, the Cuban densified wood market decreased by -83% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, saw a strong expansion. Densified wood consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In 2021, purchases abroad of densified wood decreased by -85.3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted pronounced growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 413% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, densified wood imports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 795%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of densified wood to Cuba, accounting for a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, densified wood imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), eightfold. Canada (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Netherlands amounted to +7.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-10.6% per year) and Canada (-7.1% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of densified wood to Cuba, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 1.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands totaled +28.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (-6.5% per year) and Chile (+24.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average densified wood import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 36% against the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 104%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+19.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
