Tea Market Size in Croatia

In 2020, the Croatian tea market decreased by -X% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Tea consumption peaked at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, consumption failed to regain the momentum.

In 2020, overseas shipments of tea were finally on the rise to reach X tonnes after three years of decline. Overall, exports continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports reached the maximum at X tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tea exports surged to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Slovenia (X tonnes), Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tonnes) and Serbia (X tonnes) were the main destinations of tea exports from Croatia, with a combined X% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Canada, Italy, Macedonia and Austria, which together accounted for a further X 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy, while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for tea exported from Croatia were Slovenia ($X), Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X) and Serbia ($X), together comprising X% of total exports. These countries were followed by Macedonia, Austria, Italy and Canada, which together accounted for a further X recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average tea export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, picking up by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when the average export price increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, export price attained the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2012 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average export prices failed to regain the momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Austria, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, purchases abroad of tea decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2017, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports showed a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tea imports dropped notably to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2020, Germany (X tonnes) constituted the largest supplier of tea to Croatia, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, tea imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X tonnes), threefold. Slovenia (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+X% per year) and Slovenia (-X% per year).

In general, import price indicated strong growth from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2009 an increase of X% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2019, and then declined markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per tonne), while the price for India ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
