In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in the Croatian clay market, when its value increased by 22% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, showed a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, clay exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 91%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Slovenia (X tons) was the main destination for clay exports from Croatia, with a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, clay exports to Slovenia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Russia (X tons), ninefold. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Slovenia amounted to -1.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (-8.7% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (0.0% per year).
In value terms, Slovenia ($X) remains the key foreign market for clay exports from Croatia, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by the United Arab Emirates, with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Slovenia stood at +14.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+96.1% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (0.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average clay export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 85% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 106% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+29.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Croatia
After four years of decline, purchases abroad of clays increased by 4.1% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 15%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, clay imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The Czech Republic (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of clay imports to Croatia, together accounting for 69% of total imports. Austria, the Netherlands, Slovenia, the UK, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Spain, Slovakia, Hungary and Serbia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +28.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest clay suppliers to Croatia were the Czech Republic ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 55% share of total imports. Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Spain, the UK, Hungary, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.
Among the main suppliers, Austria, with a CAGR of +28.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average clay import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, clay import price increased by +94.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 46%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+35.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
