After two years of decline, the Croatian carpet market increased by 4.8% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -3.5% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carpet production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 73%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Croatia

For the third consecutive year, Croatia recorded growth in shipments abroad of carpets and other textile floor coverings, which increased by 19% to X square meters in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 172%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X square meters in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, carpet exports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 90% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Bosnia and Herzegovina (X square meters) was the main destination for carpet exports from Croatia, with a 44% share of total exports. Moreover, carpet exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Serbia (X square meters), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Slovenia (X square meters), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to +46.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (+54.2% per year) and Slovenia (+24.1% per year).

In value terms, Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X), Serbia ($X) and Slovenia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for carpet exported from Croatia worldwide, with a combined 70% share of total exports. Germany, Romania and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +132.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average carpet export price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, declining by -13.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price faced a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovenia (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Croatia

In 2021, carpet imports into Croatia skyrocketed to X square meters, with an increase of 24% compared with 2020 figures. In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +21.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, carpet imports declined to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Belgium (X square meters) constituted the largest supplier of carpet to Croatia, with a 32% share of total imports. Moreover, carpet imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X square meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X square meters), with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Belgium amounted to +6.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+17.3% per year) and Poland (+60.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest carpet suppliers to Croatia were Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 50% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Poland, with a CAGR of +40.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average carpet import price amounted to $X per square meter, falling by -21.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2018 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Romania ($X per square meter), while the price for India ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Serbia (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
