Exports from Colombia

In 2021, the amount of chalk and dolomite exported from Colombia soared to X tons, rising by 23% against the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dolomite exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Venezuela (X tons) was the main destination for dolomite exports from Colombia, with a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, dolomite exports to Venezuela exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Peru (X tons), fivefold. Ecuador (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Venezuela totaled +10.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (-0.7% per year) and Ecuador (-18.9% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for dolomite exported from Colombia were Venezuela ($X), Peru ($X) and Ecuador ($X), together accounting for 98% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Venezuela, with a CAGR of -2.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2021, the average dolomite export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Panama ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ecuador (-4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Colombia

In 2021, imports of chalk and dolomite into Colombia expanded modestly to X tons, growing by 3.9% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 84%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dolomite imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 111%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Guatemala (X tons) were the main suppliers of dolomite imports to Colombia, together accounting for 80% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +130.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chalk and dolomite to Colombia, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Guatemala, with a 17% share.

Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the price for South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
