Asparagus Market Size in Colombia

For the fifth consecutive year, the Colombian asparagus market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2020. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the market value increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Asparagus Production in Colombia

In value terms, asparagus production contracted to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Asparagus production peaked at $X in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2020, the average yield of asparagus in Colombia expanded modestly to X tonnes per ha, with an increase of X% on the year before. Overall, the yield, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tonnes per ha. from 2009 to 2020, the growth of the average asparagus yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2020, the total area harvested in terms of asparagus production in Colombia amounted to X ha, leveling off at 2019. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to asparagus production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Colombia

In 2020, overseas shipments of asparagus increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asparagus exports fell to $X in 2020. In general, exports, however, showed a precipitous slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Exports peaked at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tonnes) was the main destination for asparagus exports from Colombia, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, asparagus exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Czech Republic (X tonnes), threefold. Germany (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume to the Netherlands amounted to -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (+X% per year) and Germany (-X% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the key foreign market for asparagus exports from Colombia, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by the Czech Republic ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Finland, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value to the Netherlands totaled -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-X% per year) and Finland (X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average asparagus export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, declining by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per tonne in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Finland, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Colombia

In 2020, overseas purchases of asparagus decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2017, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tonnes in 2019, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In value terms, asparagus imports soared to $X in 2020. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Imports peaked in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
