In 2022, after ten years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of wood pellets and other agglomerates, when their volume decreased by -2% to X tons. In general, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, wood pellets and other agglomerates exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 39%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Russia was the major exporter of wood pellets and other agglomerates in the CIS, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 78% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), constituting a 21% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood pellets and other agglomerates exports from Russia stood at +9.3%. At the same time, Belarus (+12.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +12.6% from 2012-2022. Belarus (+4.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -4.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest wood pellets and other agglomerates supplier in the CIS, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 23% share of total exports.

In Russia, wood pellets and other agglomerates exports increased at an average annual rate of +9.4% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 7.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+2.8%).

Imports in CIS

Wood pellets and other agglomerates imports surged to X tons in 2022, picking up by 66% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 77%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, wood pellets and other agglomerates imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Belarus (X tons) represented the major importer of wood pellets and other agglomerates, generating 61% of total imports. Moldova (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Kazakhstan (10%) and Russia (7.3%).

Belarus was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wood pellets and other agglomerates imports, with a CAGR of +31.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Moldova (+29.0%), Kazakhstan (+15.4%) and Russia (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Belarus (+28 p.p.) and Moldova (+20 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan and Russia saw its share reduced by -10.6% and -32.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Belarus ($X), Moldova ($X) and Russia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 90% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Moldova, with a CAGR of +42.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -10.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 43%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (+10.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
