Wood Charcoal Market Size in CIS

In 2021, the CIS wood charcoal market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood charcoal production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Wood Charcoal Exports

Exports in CIS

In 2021, shipments abroad of wood charcoal decreased by -12.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after six years of growth. In general, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 80%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood charcoal exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Russia represented the major exporter of wood charcoal in the CIS, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 69% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), generating a 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood charcoal exports from Russia stood at +11.9%. At the same time, Belarus (+20.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +20.2% from 2012-2021. While the share of Belarus (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-11.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest wood charcoal supplier in the CIS, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.

In Russia, wood charcoal exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, surging by 36% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Russia amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+0.7%).

Imports in CIS

In 2021, wood charcoal imports in the CIS was estimated at X tons, stabilizing at 2020. In general, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 76%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood charcoal imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the key importer of wood charcoal in the CIS, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 55% of total imports in 2021. Belarus (X tons) took a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (7.7%). Moldova (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Armenia (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +27.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+42.9%), Armenia (+34.2%), Kyrgyzstan (+33.6%), Belarus (+23.9%) and Moldova (+18.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +42.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-15.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Moldova and Kyrgyzstan increased by +41, +16, +3.3, +2.5, +2.2 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wood charcoal in the CIS, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +21.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+15.9% per year) and Moldova (+15.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Moldova (-2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
