Wine Market Size in CIS

The CIS wine market expanded remarkably to $X in 2021, increasing by 5.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a slight slump. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Wine Production in CIS

In value terms, wine production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in CIS

Wine exports dropped slightly to X litres in 2021, waning by -2% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wine exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Moldova prevails in exports structure, resulting at X litres, which was near 83% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Russia (X litres), mixing up a 4.6% share of total exports. The following exporters - Armenia (X litres), Uzbekistan (X litres), Azerbaijan (X litres) and Belarus (X litres) - together made up 12% of total exports.

Moldova experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wine and grape must. At the same time, Russia (+22.7%), Belarus (+22.5%) and Armenia (+11.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +22.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Azerbaijan (-5.3%) and Uzbekistan (-25.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia, Uzbekistan, Armenia and Belarus increased by +3.9, +3.7, +2.3 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Moldova ($X) remains the largest wine supplier in the CIS, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 7.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Armenia, with a 6.6% share.

In Moldova, wine exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Russia (+22.7% per year) and Armenia (+12.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per litre in 2021, rising by 20% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per litre), while Uzbekistan ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+1.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X litres of wine and grape must were imported in the CIS; with an increase of 5.3% against 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +80.9% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Russia represented the major importing country with an import of about X litres, which accounted for 80% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X litres), creating a 14% share of total imports. Kazakhstan (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wine imports into Russia stood at -6.2%. At the same time, Belarus (+2.8%) and Kazakhstan (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +2.8% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belarus and Kazakhstan increased by +7.2 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wine and grape must in the CIS, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 5.9% share of total imports.

In Russia, wine imports increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+4.0% per year) and Kazakhstan (+3.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per litre, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per litre), while Belarus ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+8.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
