Vegetable Market Size in CIS

The CIS vegetable market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, declining by X% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Vegetable Production in CIS

In value terms, vegetable production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of X%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of vegetable production was Russia (X tons), accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, vegetable production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Uzbekistan (X tons), twofold. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a X% share.

In Russia, vegetable production declined by an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (X% per year) and Kazakhstan (X% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of vegetables in the CIS was estimated at X tons per ha, stabilizing at 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the vegetable yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of vegetables were harvested in the CIS; approximately equating the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to vegetable production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in CIS

In 2022, overseas shipments of vegetables were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, vegetable exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of vegetables, namely Uzbekistan, Belarus and Kazakhstan, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Azerbaijan (X tons) held an X% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kyrgyzstan (X%) and Russia (X%). Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest vegetable supplying countries in the CIS were Azerbaijan ($X), Belarus ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X), together comprising X% of total exports.

Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of X%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Azerbaijan ($X per ton), while Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, imports of vegetables in the CIS dropped to X tons, declining by X% against the year before. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to vegetable imports into Russia stood at X%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (X%), Kyrgyzstan (X%), Kazakhstan (X%), Azerbaijan (X%) and Belarus (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Moldova experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Uzbekistan (X p.p.), Kazakhstan (X p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (X p.p.), Azerbaijan (X p.p.) and Belarus (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported vegetables in the CIS, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with an X% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a X% share.
