Unbleached Sulphate Pulp Exports

Exports in CIS

In 2022, shipments abroad of unbleached sulphate pulp decreased by -10.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total exports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +2.6% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 44%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, unbleached sulphate pulp exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Russia (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total exports in 2022.

Russia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the unbleached sulphate pulp exports, with a CAGR of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest unbleached sulphate pulp supplier in the CIS.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, overseas purchases of unbleached sulphate pulp decreased by -20.7% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 68% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, unbleached sulphate pulp imports declined sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 112%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) represented the largest importer of unbleached sulphate pulp in the CIS, mixing up 95% of total import. Uzbekistan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +47.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Belarus ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 89% of total imports.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+5.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
