Sandstone Exports

Exports in CIS

In 2022, the amount of sandstone exported in the CIS contracted to X tons, with a decrease of -13% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 101% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, sandstone exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the key exporter of sandstone, constituting 79% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (4.9%).

Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +26.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+58.6%) and Belarus (+11.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +58.6% from 2012-2022. In Russia, sandstone exports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+13.0% per year) and Kazakhstan (+27.9% per year).

The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 66%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of sandstone were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, imports saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 109%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sandstone imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Russia was the largest importer of sandstone in the CIS, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 77% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons), together creating a 22% share of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
