For the fifth year in a row, the CIS recorded decline in overseas shipments of roundwood (coniferous), which decreased by -39.8% to X cubic meters in 2021. In general, exports recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 12%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, coniferous roundwood exports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 8.8%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Russia dominates exports structure, recording X cubic meters, which was near 98% of total exports in 2021. Kyrgyzstan (X cubic meters) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to coniferous roundwood exports from Russia stood at -12.7%. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+38.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +38.8% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Russia and Kyrgyzstan increased by +4.1 and +1.5 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest coniferous roundwood supplier in the CIS, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kyrgyzstan ($X), with a 0.4% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, rising by 33% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, coniferous roundwood export price increased by +77.5% against 2016 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per cubic meter), while Kyrgyzstan totaled $X per cubic meter.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kyrgyzstan (+6.0%).
Coniferous Roundwood Imports
Imports in CIS
Coniferous roundwood imports skyrocketed to X cubic meters in 2021, jumping by 34% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 95%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, coniferous roundwood imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 218%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Kazakhstan was the largest importing country with an import of around X cubic meters, which recorded 70% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X cubic meters) held a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (8.5%).
Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +14.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+57.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +57.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-2.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Uzbekistan and Belarus increased by +21 and +8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Belarus ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 96% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Belarus, with a CAGR of +48.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per cubic meter, reducing by -6.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 63%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per cubic meter), while Kazakhstan ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (-5.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
