After two years of decline, the CIS quicklime market increased by 11% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Quicklime Production in CIS
In value terms, quicklime production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in CIS
For the sixth year in a row, the CIS recorded growth in shipments abroad of quicklime, which increased by 4.9% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 167% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Exports by Country
Russia represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 62% of total exports. Uzbekistan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Belarus (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 34% share of total exports. The following exporters - Azerbaijan (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.5% share of total exports.
Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +18.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Azerbaijan (+407.5%), Moldova (+69.4%) and Belarus (+10.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Azerbaijan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +407.5% from 2012-2021. Uzbekistan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Uzbekistan (+18 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+1.8 p.p.) and Moldova (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-6.3 p.p.) and Belarus (-15.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest quicklime supplying countries in the CIS were Russia ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Belarus ($X), with a combined 95% share of total exports. Moldova and Azerbaijan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 3.1%.
Among the main exporting countries, Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +372.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+14.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of quicklime decreased by -0.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, quicklime imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Kazakhstan (X tons) was the major importer of quicklime, constituting 41% of total imports. Belarus (X tons) took a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Russia (17%), Armenia (11%) and Kyrgyzstan (5.3%).
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Armenia (with a CAGR of +126.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Russia ($X) and Armenia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 82% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Armenia, with a CAGR of +118.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 24%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
