Potato Market Size in CIS

The CIS potato market declined modestly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of X% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Potato Production in CIS

In value terms, potato production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by X% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Russia (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of potato production, comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, potato production in Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Kazakhstan (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belarus (X tons), with an X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Russia stood at X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (X% per year) and Belarus (X% per year).

The average potato yield expanded rapidly to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by X% against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The potato harvested area fell to X ha in 2022, dropping by X% against the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the harvested area increased by X%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to potato production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Potato Exports

Exports in CIS

In 2022, potato exports in the CIS skyrocketed to X tons, growing by X% against the year before. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, potato exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the key exporters of potatoes in 2022, finishing at approx. X% and X% of total exports, respectively. Russia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Azerbaijan (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons). All these countries together held near X% share of total exports.

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of potatoes decreased by X% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
