Exports in CIS

In 2022, overseas shipments of pig iron and spiegeleisen increased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pig iron exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of pig iron and spiegeleisen, namely Russia, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of pig iron and spiegeleisen. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) also remains the largest pig iron supplier in the CIS.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to X%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, waning by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell notably in the following year.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Russia.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Russia amounted to X% per year.

In 2022, imports of pig iron and spiegeleisen in the CIS reduced slightly to X tons, dropping by X% against 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pig iron imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Belarus prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2022. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Moldova (X%). The following importers - Kazakhstan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) - together made up X% of total imports.

Imports into Belarus decreased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Moldova (X%), Azerbaijan (X%) and Russia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Moldova (X p.p.), Russia (X p.p.) and Azerbaijan (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Belarus saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Belarus ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pig iron and spiegeleisen in the CIS, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Moldova, with a X% share.

In Belarus, pig iron imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (X% per year) and Moldova (X% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by X% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of X%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
