In value terms, paper knife production surged to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a precipitous contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 739% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of paper knives decreased by -41.6% to X units for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, paper knife exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 41%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Russia (X units) and Belarus (X units) was the largest exporter of paper knives in the CIS, creating 99% of total export.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +44.5%).
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest paper knife supplier in the CIS, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia stood at +13.0%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the CIS stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 48% against the previous year. Export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper knife export price increased by +48.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 53% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per unit), while Belarus stood at $X per unit.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+9.2%).

Imports in CIS
After two years of growth, purchases abroad of paper knives decreased by -9.8% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 151%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, paper knife imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 125% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
Russia dominates imports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 78% of total imports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 7.7% share, followed by Belarus (4.8%) and Uzbekistan (4.8%). Armenia (X units) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper knife imports into Russia stood at +5.5%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+13.1%), Armenia (+9.4%), Belarus (+7.3%) and Kazakhstan (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +13.1% from 2012-2022. Uzbekistan (+4.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan and Russia saw its share reduced by -1.6% and -4.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paper knives in the CIS, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 7.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to +4.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+4.0% per year) and Belarus (+2.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per unit, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per unit), while Uzbekistan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
