Over the period under review, consumption recorded a perceptible descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, x-ray examination preparations production declined significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production saw a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 45% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations decreased by -5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 352% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, x-ray examination preparations exports dropped sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 285% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Russia was the key exporter of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations in the CIS, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 57% of total exports in 2021. Armenia (X tons) took a 36% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (4.5%). Kazakhstan (X kg) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Belarus (with a CAGR of +23.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest x-ray examination preparations supplier in the CIS, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Armenia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 3.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Russia amounted to +33.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Armenia (+5.4% per year) and Belarus (+12.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -30.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 85% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+10.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS
In 2021, supplies from abroad of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations decreased by -12% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 30%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, x-ray examination preparations imports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Russia prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 74% of total imports in 2021. Kazakhstan (X tons) took an 8.5% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (5.9%) and Armenia (4.9%). Uzbekistan (X tons) and Azerbaijan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Russia decreased at an average annual rate of -8.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Armenia (+28.2%), Azerbaijan (+9.9%), Belarus (+4.5%) and Kazakhstan (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +28.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-10.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Armenia (+4.6 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+4.4 p.p.), Belarus (+3.7 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+2.6 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-17.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations in the CIS, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Russia amounted to -6.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+1.5% per year) and Belarus (+2.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2021, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 27%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
