For the third year in a row, the CIS medical instruments market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 29% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, medical instruments production rose remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -8.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of instruments used in medical sciences, when their volume decreased by -2% to X tons. Overall, exports saw a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, medical instruments exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Russia (X tons) was the major exporter of instruments used in medical sciences, making up 59% of total exports. Belarus (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 36% share, followed by Armenia (5.4%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Armenia (with a CAGR of +41.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest medical instruments supplier in the CIS, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

In Russia, medical instruments exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (-8.2% per year) and Armenia (+39.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.7% against the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, medical instruments export price decreased by -29.5% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 33%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

Medical instruments imports reduced markedly to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -53.7% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 38%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, medical instruments imports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Kazakhstan (X tons) represented the main importer of instruments used in medical sciences, mixing up 43% of total imports. Armenia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Belarus (X tons), Kyrgyzstan (X tons), Azerbaijan (X tons) and Russia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 53% share of total imports. Moldova (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Armenia (+13.6%), Kyrgyzstan (+11.0%), Moldova (+3.8%) and Azerbaijan (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Armenia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +13.6% from 2012-2022. Belarus experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Russia (-25.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Kazakhstan (+27 p.p.), Armenia (+11 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (+8.4 p.p.), Belarus (+6.3 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+6.1 p.p.) and Moldova (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -61.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Belarus ($X) and Russia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 64% share of total imports. Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Armenia, with a CAGR of +13.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -26.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 32%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
