In 2021, the CIS gym and fitness equipment market decreased by -7.3% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a strong increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Production of Gym and Fitness Equipment in CIS
In value terms, gym and fitness equipment production reduced markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 296% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

Exports in CIS
Gym and fitness equipment exports rose markedly to X tons in 2021, growing by 8.6% on 2020. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 50%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, gym and fitness equipment exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 53%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Russia represented the largest exporter of gym and fitness equipment in the CIS, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 69% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), comprising a 29% share of total exports.
Exports from Russia increased at an average annual rate of +19.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Belarus (+30.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +30.9% from 2012-2021. While the share of Belarus (+14 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Russia (-14.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest gym and fitness equipment supplier in the CIS, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belarus ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.
In Russia, gym and fitness equipment exports expanded at an average annual rate of +18.1% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 21% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while Belarus amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (-0.7%).
Imports of Gym and Fitness Equipment
Imports in CIS
For the third consecutive year, the CIS recorded growth in overseas purchases of gym and fitness equipment, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +63.4% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, gym and fitness equipment imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +87.6% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Russia was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 74% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Belarus (7.3%). The following importers - Azerbaijan (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) - each resulted at a 4.3% share of total imports.
Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of gym and fitness equipment. At the same time, Belarus (+14.0%), Uzbekistan (+12.6%), Kazakhstan (+9.7%) and Azerbaijan (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +14.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Kazakhstan, Belarus and Uzbekistan increased by +5.6, +4.6 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported gym and fitness equipment in the CIS, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with a 5% share.
In Russia, gym and fitness equipment imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (+15.6% per year) and Belarus (+10.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+16.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
