Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9% share, followed by Belarus (7.2%). The following importers - Azerbaijan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Moldova (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) - together made up 9.3% of total imports.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+82.1%), Kyrgyzstan (+28.6%), Moldova (+14.9%), Kazakhstan (+13.2%), Azerbaijan (+12.5%) and Belarus (+11.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +82.1% from 2012-2021. Kazakhstan (+4.8 p.p.), Belarus (+3.5 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+2.3 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+1.6 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -15.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
