Dairy Spread Market Size in CIS

After three years of growth, the CIS dairy spread market decreased by -3.1% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, dairy spread exports in the CIS was estimated at X tons, with an increase of 13% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 58% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dairy spread exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Belarus was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 89% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Russia (X tons), generating an 11% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to dairy spread exports from Belarus stood at -8.8%. At the same time, Russia (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, dairy spread export price increased by +8.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 49%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, the amount of dairy spreads imported in the CIS was estimated at X tons, picking up by 2.1% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dairy spread imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 83%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 79% of total imports in 2022. Moldova (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Kazakhstan (X tons). All these countries together took near 18% share of total imports. Azerbaijan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of dairy spreads. At the same time, Moldova (+69.0%) and Azerbaijan (+22.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Moldova emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +69.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kazakhstan (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Russia (+11 p.p.), Moldova (+9.4 p.p.) and Azerbaijan (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Kazakhstan saw its share reduced by -21.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dairy spreads in the CIS, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Moldova ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 9.5% share.

In Russia, dairy spread imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Moldova (+67.9% per year) and Kazakhstan (-8.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in the CIS stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Kazakhstan ($X per ton) and Moldova ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) and Azerbaijan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Azerbaijan (+11.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
