The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. In 2022, after five years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood, when their volume increased by 35% to X units. Overall, exports saw a measured expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood barrel exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 50%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Russia dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 81% of total exports in 2022. Moldova (X units) took a 9.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Belarus (9.3%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood barrel exports from Russia stood at +3.0%. At the same time, Belarus (+55.0%) and Moldova (+14.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +55.0% from 2012-2022. Belarus (+9.1 p.p.) and Moldova (+5.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Russia saw its share reduced by -11% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the largest wood barrel supplier in the CIS, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

In Russia, wood barrel exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belarus (+56.2% per year) and Moldova (+10.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in the CIS amounted to $X per unit, declining by -11.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per unit), while Russia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belarus (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in CIS

In 2022, overseas purchases of casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood decreased by -18.5% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 51%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then shrank notably in the following year.

In value terms, wood barrel imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Russia prevails in imports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 72% of total imports in 2022. Belarus (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Moldova (X units) and Uzbekistan (X units). All these countries together held near 19% share of total imports. The following importers - Armenia (X units) and Kazakhstan (X units) - each resulted at an 8.3% share of total imports.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of +12.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belarus (+37.8%), Uzbekistan (+31.5%) and Kazakhstan (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belarus emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of +37.8% from 2012-2022. Moldova experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Armenia (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (+20 p.p.), Belarus (+6.3 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+5.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Moldova (-7.1 p.p.) and Armenia (-12.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported casks, barrels, vats, tubs, and coopers products of wood in the CIS, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Moldova ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 5.6% share.

In Russia, wood barrel imports increased at an average annual rate of +13.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Moldova (+3.1% per year) and Uzbekistan (+56.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in the CIS amounted to $X per unit, growing by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per unit), while Kazakhstan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+18.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
