From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +85.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for silk fabric exported from China were Italy ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Pakistan ($X), together accounting for 50% of total exports. India, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Turkey, Japan, Vietnam, Afghanistan, the UK, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +76.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average silk fabric export price amounted to $X per square meter, with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 71% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+8.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. Imports peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, silk fabric imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, faced a deep contraction. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Moreover, silk fabric imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X square meters), threefold. From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy amounted to -7.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-14.6% per year) and South Korea (-19.7% per year).
