Unmanufactured Tobacco Market Size in China

In 2020, the Chinese unmanufactured tobacco market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. After three years of growth, overseas shipments of tobacco (unmanufactured) decreased by -X% to X tonnes in 2020. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports reached the maximum at X tonnes in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2020. Overall, total exports indicated a slight increase from 2007 to 2020: its value decreased at an average annual rate of -X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, exports decreased by -X% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X tonnes), Indonesia (X tonnes) and the United Arab Emirates (X tonnes) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from China, with a combined X% share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in the United Arab Emirates (+X% per year), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Belgium ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) were the largest markets for unmanufactured tobacco exported from China worldwide, together accounting for X% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, the United Arab Emirates (+X% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average unmanufactured tobacco export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, waning by -X% against the previous year. in general, export price indicated a modest increase from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, unmanufactured tobacco export price decreased by -X% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009 an increase of X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Viet Nam ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to France ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Viet Nam, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China

In 2020, overseas purchases of tobacco (unmanufactured) decreased by -X% to X tonnes for the first time since 2015, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tonnes in 2019, and then declined significantly in the following year.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2020. in general, imports, however, saw a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2020, Zimbabwe (X tonnes) constituted the largest unmanufactured tobacco supplier to China, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, unmanufactured tobacco imports from Zimbabwe exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tonnes), eightfold. Zambia (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume from Zimbabwe stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-X% per year) and Zambia (+X% per year).

In value terms, Zimbabwe ($X) constituted the largest supplier of unmanufactured tobacco to China, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Zambia ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value from Zimbabwe amounted to +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Zambia (+X% per year) and Brazil (-X% per year).

In 2020, the average unmanufactured tobacco import price amounted to $X per tonne, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2020, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 when the average import price increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per tonne in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2020, import prices failed to regain the momentum.
