Plywood Market Size in China

In 2020, the Chinese plywood market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2013, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption saw a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009 when the market value increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plywood production expanded slightly to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. Over the period under review, production recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, production failed to regain the momentum.

In 2020, shipments abroad of plywood decreased by -X% to X cubic meters, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at X cubic meters in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plywood exports declined to $X in 2020. Overall, total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, exports decreased by -X% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The Philippines (X cubic meters), Viet Nam (X cubic meters) and the UK (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of plywood exports from China, with a combined X% share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Philippines (+X% per year), while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X), the U.S. ($X) and the UK ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for plywood exported from China worldwide, together comprising X% of total exports.

The Philippines recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average plywood export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2020, waning by -X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 an increase of X% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2020, overseas purchases of plywood were finally on the rise to reach X cubic meters after three years of decline. Overall, imports recorded a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plywood imports totaled $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2020, Russia (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of plywood to China, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, plywood imports from Russia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (X cubic meters), fourfold. Malaysia (X cubic meters) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume from Russia totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-X% per year) and Malaysia (+X% per year).

These countries were followed by Malaysia, Japan, Belgium, Finland, Romania, Latvia, Chile and Thailand, which together accounted for a further X the main suppliers, Romania (+X% per year) saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2020, the average plywood import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, with a decrease of -X% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by X% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, import prices failed to regain the momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Chile ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
