Pistachio Market Size in China
The Chinese pistachio market dropped rapidly to $X in 2021, waning by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
Pistachio Production in China
In value terms, pistachio production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export prices. In general, the total production indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +X% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
The average yield of pistachios in China dropped modestly to X tonnes per ha in 2021, waning by -X% against the year before. Overall, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The pistachio yield peaked at X tonnes per ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2021, the harvested area of pistachios in China reached X ha, with an increase of X% compared with the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the harvested area increased by X% against the previous year. The pistachio harvested area peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports from China
In 2021, shipments abroad of pistachios was finally on the rise to reach X tonnes after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tonnes in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, pistachio exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tonnes), Germany (X tonnes) and Hong Kong SAR (X tonnes) were the main destinations of pistachio exports from China, with a combined X% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (+X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for pistachio exported from China were the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising X% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Italy, with a CAGR of +X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average pistachio export price stood at $X per tonne in 2021, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by X% year-to-year. The export price peaked at $X per tonne in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to France ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pistachio Imports
Imports into China
After six years of growth, supplies from abroad of pistachios decreased by -X% to X tonnes in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2020, and then fell sharply in the following year.
In value terms, pistachio imports declined notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Iran (X tonnes) and the United States (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of pistachio imports to China.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Iran (+X value terms, Iran ($X) and the United States ($X) appeared to be the largest pistachio suppliers to China.
Iran, with a CAGR of +X%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review.
Import Prices by Country
The average pistachio import price stood at $X per tonne in 2021, increasing by X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per tonne), while the price for Iran totaled $X per tonne.
