Pistachio Market Size in China

For the fifth consecutive year, the Chinese pistachio market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2019. Overall, consumption saw strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 when the market value increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2019 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Pistachio Production in China

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2019, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, pistachio exports stood at $X in 2019. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2019, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The U.S. (X tonnes) was the main destination for pistachio exports from China, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, pistachio exports to the U.S. exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X tonnes), twofold. Hong Kong SAR (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the U.S. stood at -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+X% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+X% per year).

In value terms, the U.S. ($X) remains the key foreign market for pistachio exports from China, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2019, the average annual growth rate of value to the U.S. amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+X% per year) and France (+X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average pistachio export price stood at $X per tonne in 2019, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the export price posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the maximum at $X per tonne in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2019, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2019, the country with the highest price was Viet Nam ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Poland ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into China

After four years of growth, purchases abroad of pistachios decreased by -X% to X tonnes in 2019. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2018, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, pistachio imports amounted to $X in 2019. Overall, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2019 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The U.S. (X tonnes) and Iran (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of pistachio imports to China, together accounting for X% of total imports.
