Over the period under review, the total production indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +40.4% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 46% against the previous year. Kiwi fruit production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.
In 2021, the average yield of kiwi fruit in China fell slightly to X tons per ha, approximately reflecting 2020. In general, the yield saw a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 16%. In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of kiwi fruit, when their volume decreased by -5.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 226% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, kiwi fruit exports contracted slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 190% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Russia (X tons) was the main destination for kiwi fruit exports from China, with a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, kiwi fruit exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hong Kong SAR (X tons), sixfold. Indonesia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Russia stood at +31.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+235.8% per year) and Indonesia (+33.4% per year).
In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for kiwi fruit exports from China, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Russia amounted to +36.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hong Kong SAR (+225.5% per year) and Malaysia (+33.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average kiwi fruit export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 20% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into China
In 2021, the amount of kiwi fruit imported into China totaled X tons, surging by 9.1% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 44%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, kiwi fruit imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 61%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, New Zealand (X tons) was the main kiwi fruit supplier to China, accounting for a 91% share of total imports. Moreover, kiwi fruit imports from New Zealand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), more than tenfold. Chile (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from New Zealand totaled +13.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+18.9% per year) and Chile (-10.5% per year).
In value terms, New Zealand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of kiwi fruit to China, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 4.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 1.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from New Zealand totaled +18.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+24.7% per year) and Chile (-7.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average kiwi fruit import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 11% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, kiwi fruit import price increased by +56.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average import price increased by 23%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while the price for Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
