Glass Fibre Filament Exports

Exports from China

In 2021, overseas shipments of glass fibre filaments increased by 36% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 51% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, glass fibre filament exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The United States (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the main destinations of glass fibre filament exports from China, with a combined 29% share of total exports.

Imports into China

Glass fibre filament imports into China reduced notably to X tons in 2021, shrinking by -49.4% on the previous year. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 93% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, glass fibre filament imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 162%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of glass fibre filament to China, accounting for a 34% share of total imports. Moreover, glass fibre filament imports from Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bahrain (X tons), with a 9.5% share.

Among the main suppliers, Bahrain, with a CAGR of +160.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average glass fibre filament import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 43% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
