Green Coffee Market Size in China
In 2020, the Chinese green coffee market decreased by -X% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% year-to-year. Green coffee consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Green Coffee Production in China
In value terms, green coffee production expanded markedly to $X in 2020 estimated in export prices. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 when the production volume increased by X% against the previous year. Green coffee production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, production failed to regain the momentum.
In 2020, the average green coffee yield in China expanded modestly to X tonnes per ha, growing by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield indicated a pronounced increase from 2007 to 2020: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, green coffee yield increased by +X% against 2010 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2009 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average green coffee yield hit record highs in 2020 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2020, approx. X ha of coffee (green) were harvested in China; with a decrease of -X% against 2019 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 when the harvested area increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to green coffee production reached the maximum at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.
Green Coffee Exports
Exports from China
For the third consecutive year, China recorded growth in overseas shipments of coffee (green), which increased by X% to X tonnes in 2020. Overall, exports showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2012 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Exports peaked at X tonnes in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, green coffee exports surged to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports saw resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2011 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tonnes) was the main destination for green coffee exports from China, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, green coffee exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Vietnam (X tonnes), threefold. Russia (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.
From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Germany totaled +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+X% per year) and Russia (+X% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for green coffee exports from China, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by the U.S. ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Russia, with a X% share.
From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany totaled +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the U.S. (+X% per year) and Russia (+X% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average green coffee export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, increasing by X% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 an increase of X% year-to-year. As a result, export price reached the peak level of $X per tonne. from 2012 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was the U.S. ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Green Coffee Imports
Imports into China
In 2020, approx. X tonnes of coffee (green) were imported into China; leveling off at 2019 figures. In general, imports showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.
In value terms, green coffee imports totaled $X in 2020. Overall, imports posted a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2020 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2020, Vietnam (X tonnes) constituted the largest green coffee supplier to China, with a X% share of total imports. Moreover, green coffee imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tonnes), threefold. Guatemala (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.
From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Vietnam stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+X% per year) and Guatemala (+X% per year).
In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Brazil ($X) and Colombia ($X) constituted the largest green coffee suppliers to China, with a combined X% share of total imports. Guatemala, Ethiopia, Indonesia and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X terms of the main suppliers, Guatemala (+X% per year) saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average green coffee import price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2007 to 2020: its price increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, green coffee import price decreased by -X% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2011 when the average import price increased by X% y-o-y. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per tonne), while the price for Vietnam ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
