Exports from Chile

In 2022, shipments abroad of knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings increased by 0.3% to X square meters, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 1,786% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X square meters. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, knotted carpet exports contracted remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 1,259% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Paraguay (X square meters) was the main destination for knotted carpet exports from Chile, accounting for a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, knotted carpet exports to Paraguay exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Peru (X square meters), threefold. Bolivia (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Paraguay totaled +8.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (+56.0% per year) and Bolivia (+1.3% per year).

In value terms, Paraguay ($X) remains the key foreign market for knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings exports from Chile, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Bolivia, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Paraguay amounted to +7.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Peru (+58.7% per year) and Bolivia (+15.9% per year).

In 2022, the average knotted carpet export price amounted to $X per square meter, shrinking by -15.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 77%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bolivia ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uruguay (+25.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Chile

In 2022, overseas purchases of knotted carpets and other knotted textile floor coverings decreased by -47.3% to X square meters for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 269% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X square meters, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, knotted carpet imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 111% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X square meters) constituted the largest knotted carpet supplier to Chile, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, knotted carpet imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X square meters), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +21.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+11.2% per year) and Turkey (+11.0% per year).
