Exports in Central Asia

In 2020, overseas shipments of virgin olive oil decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2010; however, from 2011 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, virgin olive oil exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2020. Overall, exports saw a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Kazakhstan was the key exporter of virgin olive oil in Central Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X kg, which was approx. X% of total exports in 2020. It was distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X kg), committing a X% share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Uzbekistan (+X% per year).

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the largest virgin olive oil supplier in Central Asia, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Uzbekistan ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

In Kazakhstan, virgin olive oil exports shrank by an average annual rate of -X% over the period from 2007-2020.

The virgin olive oil export price in Central Asia stood at $X per tonne in 2020, dropping by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009 an increase of X% y-o-y. The level of export peaked at $X per tonne in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per tonne), while Uzbekistan stood at $X per tonne.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kazakhstan.

In 2020, after four years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of virgin olive oil, when their volume decreased by -X% to X tonnes. In general, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2010 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. The volume of import peaked at X tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, virgin olive oil imports declined to $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan (X tonnes) and Kazakhstan (X tonnes) dominates virgin olive oil imports structure, together making up X% of total imports. Mongolia (X tonnes) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tonnes). All these countries together occupied near X% share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Uzbekistan, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
