Granite Building Stone Exports

Exports in Central Asia

For the third consecutive year, Central Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of granite building stone, which increased by 85% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 290% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, granite building stone exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a significant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Uzbekistan (X tons) represented the main exporter of granite building stone, creating 60% of total exports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (X tons). All these countries together took near 40% share of total exports.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the granite building stone exports, with a CAGR of +136.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+40.1%) and Kazakhstan (+21.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Uzbekistan (+60 p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Kazakhstan (-57 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) emerged as the largest granite building stone supplier in Central Asia, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Uzbekistan totaled +149.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+11.7% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (+45.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Central Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 146% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+5.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Central Asia

In 2021, imports of granite building stone in Central Asia amounted to X tons, picking up by 11% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +84.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, granite building stone imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 55%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Kazakhstan was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 73% of total imports. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Tajikistan (5.5%) and Turkmenistan (4.5%). The following importers - Kyrgyzstan (X tons) and Mongolia (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.3% share of total imports.

Imports into Kazakhstan increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (+12.0%) and Tajikistan (+8.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Central Asia, with a CAGR of +12.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-2.2%), Mongolia (-9.9%) and Turkmenistan (-17.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+13 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+9.4 p.p.) and Tajikistan (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mongolia (-3.7 p.p.) and Turkmenistan (-22.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The second position in the ranking was taken by Uzbekistan ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkmenistan, with a 7.2% share.

In Kazakhstan, granite building stone imports declined by an average annual rate of -5.7% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Uzbekistan (+11.3% per year) and Turkmenistan (-13.7% per year).
