Coal Exports

Exports in Central Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of coal increased by X% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Overall, exports posted a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, coal exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed significant growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Mongolia represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), creating a X% share of total exports. Kyrgyzstan (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mongolia (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Mongolia ($X) emerged as the largest coal supplier in Central Asia, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kazakhstan ($X), with a X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Mongolia totaled X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kazakhstan (X% per year) and Kyrgyzstan (X% per year).

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mongolia ($X per ton), while Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of coal decreased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, coal imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of X% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Uzbekistan represented the key importer of coal in Central Asia, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. X% of total imports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a X% share, followed by Kyrgyzstan (X%). Tajikistan (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Uzbekistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the coal imports, with a CAGR of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tajikistan (X%) and Kazakhstan (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Kyrgyzstan (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Kazakhstan (X p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest coal importing markets in Central Asia were Uzbekistan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Kyrgyzstan ($X), together accounting for X% of total imports.
