For the third year in a row, the Canadian syringe market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 6% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Canada

In 2021, exports of syringes, with or without needles from Canada surged to X units, picking up by 178% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The exports peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, syringe exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The United States (X units) was the main destination for syringe exports from Canada, accounting for a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, syringe exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Norway (X units), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belgium (X units), with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Norway (0.0% per year) and Belgium (+37.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average syringe export price amounted to $X per unit, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 81% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+15.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Canada

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of syringes, with or without needles decreased by -6.4% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +49.0% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, syringe imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the United States (X units) constituted the largest syringe supplier to Canada, accounting for a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, syringe imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X units), fourfold. Mexico (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States amounted to +2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+37.5% per year) and Mexico (+53.2% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) constituted the largest supplier of syringe to Canada, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the United States amounted to -2.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+13.2% per year) and Mexico (+19.9% per year).

In 2021, the average syringe import price amounted to $X per unit, rising by 29% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were the Philippines ($X per unit) and China ($X per unit), while the price for Mexico ($X per unit) and the United States ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (-4.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
