The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 26%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports from Bulgaria

In 2021, overseas shipments of syringes, with or without needles increased by 36% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 348% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, syringe exports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 459%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Greece (X units), Turkey (X units) and the Netherlands (X units) were the main destinations of syringe exports from Bulgaria, together accounting for 79% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +123.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 347% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2020, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Turkey (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Serbia (+41.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Bulgaria

In 2021, overseas purchases of syringes, with or without needles increased by 60% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, syringe imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of syringe to Bulgaria, with a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, syringe imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belgium (X units), threefold. Slovakia (X units) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +11.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+14.6% per year) and Slovakia (+23.6% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of syringe to Bulgaria, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Germany, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +15.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (+5.5% per year) and Germany (-9.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average syringe import price amounted to $X per thousand units, with a decrease of -6% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per thousand units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per thousand units), while the price for Belgium ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+16.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
