Overall, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports reached the peak figure at X tonnes in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco exports reduced sharply to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2020, exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tonnes) was the main destination for cigarettes containing tobacco exports from Bulgaria, accounting for a X% share of total exports. Moreover, cigarettes containing tobacco exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Lebanon (X tonnes), sixfold. Italy (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates amounted to -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lebanon (X% per year) and Italy (+X% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the key foreign market for cigarettes containing tobacco exports from Bulgaria, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Italy ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Lebanon, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United Arab Emirates amounted to -X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+X% per year) and Lebanon (X% per year).

The average cigarettes containing tobacco export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, picking up by X% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2020, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. Over the period under review, average export prices hit record highs at $X per tonne in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination; the country with the highest price was Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Montenegro ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Bulgaria

In 2020, purchases abroad of cigarettes containing tobacco increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, total imports indicated temperate growth from 2007 to 2020: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, imports increased by +X% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2009 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Imports peaked in 2020 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco imports stood at $X in 2020. Overall, total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, imports increased by +X% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2009 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2020 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2020, Greece (X tonnes) constituted the largest cigarettes containing tobacco supplier to Bulgaria, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, cigarettes containing tobacco imports from Greece exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Croatia (X tonnes), with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume from Greece stood at +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+X% per year) and Croatia (+X% per year).

In value terms, Greece ($X), Poland ($X) and Croatia ($X) were the largest cigarettes containing tobacco suppliers to Bulgaria, together accounting for X% of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Lithuania, Romania and Serbia, which together accounted for a further X terms of the main suppliers, Lithuania saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2020, the average cigarettes containing tobacco import price amounted to $X per tonne, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2014 to 2020, the growth in terms of the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per tonne), while the price for Serbia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania, while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
