Exports from Brazil
Sulphites exports from Brazil declined to X tons in 2021, leveling off at the year before. In general, exports saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 174%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sulphites exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Argentina (X tons) was the main destination for sulphites exports from Brazil, with a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, sulphites exports to Argentina exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Paraguay (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Peru (X tons), with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Argentina stood at -10.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Paraguay (-1.5% per year) and Peru (+19.8% per year).
In value terms, Argentina ($X), Paraguay ($X) and Mexico ($X) constituted the largest markets for sulphites exported from Brazil worldwide, with a combined 77% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Ecuador and Peru, which together accounted for a further 11%.
Ecuador, with a CAGR of +65.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
The average sulphites export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 148%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ecuador (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Brazil
In 2021, the amount of sulphites imported into Brazil dropped to X tons, which is down by -13.4% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 63%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sulphites imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest sulphites supplier to Brazil, with a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, sulphites imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), fourfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany stood at -2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-4.1% per year) and China (+5.9% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sulphites to Brazil, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Germany was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+10.7% per year) and Italy (+0.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sulphites import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 67% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sulphites import price decreased by -5.1% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+5.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
