From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of raw hides and skins of cattle in Brazil dropped to X kg per head in 2021, shrinking by -3.6% on the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the yield increased by 25%. The cattle hide and skin yield peaked at X kg per head in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In 2021, number of animals slaughtered for cattle hide and skin production in Brazil expanded slightly to X heads, increasing by 4.3% on the previous year. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals, however, saw a pronounced decline. In 2021, exports of raw hides and skins of cattle from Brazil dropped sharply to X tons, which is down by -54.3% compared with the year before. Overall, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 126%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin exports shrank markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 86% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X tons), Uruguay (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) were the main destinations of cattle hide and skin exports from Brazil, with a combined 78% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR, China, Indonesia, Paraguay and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Paraguay (with a CAGR of +989.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hong Kong SAR ($X), Thailand ($X) and Uruguay ($X) were the largest markets for cattle hide and skin exported from Brazil worldwide, with a combined 68% share of total exports. These countries were followed by China, Nigeria, Paraguay, Indonesia and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Paraguay, with a CAGR of +916.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average cattle hide and skin export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 80% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+21.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Brazil

In 2021, the amount of raw hides and skins of cattle imported into Brazil soared to X tons, rising by 142% compared with the previous year. In general, imports recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 213% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate significant growth.
