In 2021, the Brazilian leek market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In general, the total production indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -3.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 24%. Leek production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables decreased by -21.9% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 418%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, leek exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 475% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Slovakia (X tons) was the main destination for leek exports from Brazil, accounting for a 40% share of total exports. Moreover, leek exports to Slovakia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Marshall Islands (X tons), fourfold. Panama (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.7% share.

In value terms, the largest markets for leek exported from Brazil were Slovakia ($X), Marshall Islands ($X) and Qatar ($X), with a combined 43% share of total exports.

Marshall Islands, with a CAGR of +457.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average leek export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a slight increase. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2016 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+22.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
